Chicago - Wheaton College says view of Islam, not hijab, got Christian teacher suspended

Image
Home -  If Wheaton College professor Larycia Hawkins had simply donned a headscarf to support her Muslim neighbors without explaining herself, she still might be administering final exams this week. Instead, Hawkins, a tenured political science professor at the private evangelical Christian college, proclaimed on social media that Christians and Muslims share the same God and was suspended by the college. "I stand in religious solidarity with Muslims because they, like me, a Christian, are people of the book," she posted Dec. 10 on Facebook. "And as Pope Francis stated last week, we worship the same God." That explanation rankled some evangelical Christians, who read her statement as a conflation of Christian and Muslim theology, even if they supported her symbolic gesture. "While Islam and Christianity are both monotheistic, we believe there are fundamental differences between the two faiths, including what they teach about God's revelation to

Allegations of a secret detention and interrogation site run by Chicago police and abuses that may have taken place there are being aired at a county commission hearing

Image
Home - The Tuesday hearing, led by Cook County Commissioner Richard R. Boykin, comes amid heightened criticism of the Chicago Police Department. Chicago is in Cook County. According to an investigation by The Guardian newspaper , the Chicago Police Department runs a secretive detention site at Homan Square, a sprawling compound that includes various police operations. At Homan Square, the newspaper alleges, people have been abused, kept off the books and denied access to attorneys, essentially held in the dark. The hearing is expected to include testimony from experts, advocates and people who were detained at Homan Square. It got off to a somewhat confusing start as commissioners questioned whether such a hearing was within their scope. They called a recess before returning to hear testimony. WEATHER - CHICAGO WEATHER: NEAR-RECORD WARMTH TO CONTINUE THROUGH WEEKEND

Image
Home   -  ABC7 Meteorologist Cheryl Scott says the Chicago area saw near-record warmth Thursday, with temperatures reaching 57 degrees at O'Hare Airport - that's only 5 degrees below the record set in 1879. Temperatures are expected to continue to climb throughout the weekend, reaching 62 degrees on Sunday. The mild weather may be deterring traditional cold-weather activities, but some businesses are hoping the warmer temperatures bring out more holiday shoppers. The Polar Peak Sledding Hill at the MB Financial Park in Rosemont has been rendered useless for now due to the lack of freezing temperatures. Read the full story here  Home

Protesters Call for Mayor Emanuel's Resignation in Citywide Walkout

Image
Hundreds of protesters demanding an investigation of Mayor Rahm Emanuel's administration flooded downtown Chicago streets Wednesday afternoon as part of a citywide walkout just hours after Emanuel publicly apologized for the shooting death of Laquan McDonald and vowed to fix broken Chicago police practices. The group chanted "Whose city? Our city," "Who's got to go? Rahm's got to go," and "No more killer cops." Demonstrators gathered at Daley Plaza at noon and started marching on North Dearborn. Police briefly detained two people during the protest near Dearborn and Washington as several other activists gathered around the vehicle chanting "Hell no, we won't go." The two demonstrators were later released.  "It's bigger than the shooting of Laquan MCDonald, the murder of Percy Coleman's son, it's bigger than Ronnie man, Ronald Johnson," said Willie J.R. Fleming with the Anti-Eviction Campaign. "

Something rotten in Chicago By Michael Bargo Jr.

The shooting of Laquan McDonald and the subsequent delay and alleged cover-up of the incident have provoked calls for Mayor Emanuel to resign.  But what is most interesting is how this plays into the jostling for political power going on among President Obama; Mayor Emanuel; Jesse Jackson, Sr.; Hillary Clinton; and Obama's Justice Dept. It's very interesting to note that all of the major players in Washington now have Chicago connections and Chicago-based interpersonal issues.  Jesse Jackson, Sr. ran for president and failed.  He was dismayed that Barack Obama was able to garner so much political and media support so quickly.  He didn't feel that Obama had earned the political recognition that he, Jesse Sr., had earned through decades of civil rights participation and activism. The Chicago cops who watched their fellow officer shoot a black teenager 16 times field reports claiming the 17-year-old was killed only after he swung at cops

Did the Chicago Police Department try to cover up the 2014 shooting of black teenager Laquan McDonald? Police reports released Friday sharply contrast with the dashcam videos released a few days prior. In the video, it appears Mr. McDonald was moving away from a group of police when he was shot 16 times by officer Jason Van Dyke, most of which were fired “after the teen had crumpled to the ground and was barely moving,” reported the Associated Read the full story here  HOME
