Allegations of a secret detention and interrogation site run by Chicago police and abuses that may have taken place there are being aired at a county commission hearing

Home - The Tuesday hearing, led by Cook County Commissioner Richard R. Boykin, comes amid heightened criticism of the Chicago Police Department. Chicago is in Cook County. According to an investigation by The Guardian newspaper , the Chicago Police Department runs a secretive detention site at Homan Square, a sprawling compound that includes various police operations. At Homan Square, the newspaper alleges, people have been abused, kept off the books and denied access to attorneys, essentially held in the dark. The hearing is expected to include testimony from experts, advocates and people who were detained at Homan Square. It got off to a somewhat confusing start as commissioners questioned whether such a hearing was within their scope. They called a recess before returning to hear testimony. The shooting of Laquan McDonald and the subsequent delay and alleged cover-up of the incident have provoked calls for Mayor Emanuel to resign.  But what is most interesting is how this plays into the jostling for political power going on among President Obama; Mayor Emanuel; Jesse Jackson, Sr.; Hillary Clinton; and Obama's Justice Dept. It's very interesting to note that all of the major players in Washington now have Chicago connections and Chicago-based interpersonal issues.  Jesse Jackson, Sr. ran for president and failed.  He was dismayed that Barack Obama was able to garner so much political and media support so quickly.  He didn't feel that Obama had earned the political recognition that he, Jesse Sr., had earned through decades of civil rights participation and activism. Fatal shooting In Chicago City in the 800 block of North Avers Avenue in the city's East Garfield Park neighborhood

A 25-year-old man was found unresponsive in a car, police said. He had been shot multiple times in the chest, abdomen and legs and was dead on the scene. At 1:20 a.m., two people were shot in Wicker Park, said Chicago Police spokesman Officer Hector Alfaro, citing preliminary information. They were near the intersection of Paulina Street and Milwaukee Avenue when they were shot, and both were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. No further information was immediately available. At 12:45 a.m., a 22-year-old man was shot in Chatham, Alfaro said. He was at a gas station in the 7800 block of South State Street when someone in a green van fired shots. He was shot in the foot and taken to Saint Bernard Hospital. His condition was stabilized. At 11:30 p.m., a 24-year-old woman was shot in Little Village, Alfaro said. Read the full story here.  Home
